Signifying the official arrival of the winter surf season in Hawai'i, the opening ceremony of the legendary Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational was held under rainy skies this year, symbolic of the blessings of Waimea Bay.
This prestigious event honors the life and legacy of Eddie Aikau - the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay, and notable Hawaiian surfer and navigator. His brother Clyde Aikau blessed the start of another year in this revered competition.
"The Eddie" demands the ocean's ultimate respect with many factors coming into conisderation: consistent 30 to 40-foot waves, swell hitting the bay in the right direction and wind conditions providing ridable faces.
In its storied 40-year history, the event has run only ten times, making each occurrence a rare and unforgettable spectacle. Only 45 notable big wave surfers are invited to participate, and another 25 are on the alternate list. And for the first time, every heat will feature at least two women surfers, a testament to the growing strength and influence of women in big-wave riding.
Last year, local lifeguard and big wave surfer Luke Shepardson claimed victory amidst a crowd of 50,000 spectators lining the cliffs and beaches. This year, surfing icons like John John Florence, Kelly Slater, and Greg Long are poised to battle the giants waves alongside a groundbreaking roster of notable female surfers such as Keala Kennelly, Paige Alms, Emily Erickson and Moana Jones-Wong.
The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational event waiting period opens December 14 and runs through March 13, 2025. As the saying goes, "The Bay calls the day."
